Hypnosis is safe and effective in helping people with both acute and chronic pain. Most people are able to decrease their pain using hypnosis. Some are able to eliminate their pain completely.
Hypnosis has a very long and rich history in pain management. Reports of its use in helping people with pain go back at least to the Roman Empire. James Esdaile was a British surgeon practicing in India in the early to mid 1800s. Esdaile used hypnosis (called “mesmerism” at the time) effectively as the sole anesthetic in thousands of minor surgeries and over 300 major operations. His detailed accounts of these surgeries reflects tremendous success in helping patients remain calm and comfortable during their surgical procedures.
The American Pain Society and many major pain clinics now teach and utilize hypnosis for pain management with proven success. It can be helpful with pain from literally any source. It is a safe, effective tool that many people can use to reduce or even replace painkillers that are addictive and have so many negative side effects.
